Coachella Photo Diary

“You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are.”

Coachella was such a magical experience. The positivity that radiates through my friends is beyond me. I felt so lucky to have a group of people around me that would talk about positivity, emotions, love, and theoretical thoughts on life. And even when tragedy struck, they knew how to smile and dance on. We experienced an gigantic loss at Coachella this year when one of the nicest boys I knew, left us, for the time being. His life was taken early and the effects, both good and bad, will continue to be with us until our time comes to leave. My friend Jannik was a gem. He was an angel already and will now be one forever. I wish I could describe to you is aura. He radiated positivity and welcomed new friends with open arms. When I reflect, I think about how college was a very weird time for me, where I was never comfortable opening up to people, or letting anyone in. I could barely talk to anyone without feeling incredibly withdrawn. I had a hard time going out. But every time my friends Jannik and Tom would have people over, I remember acting like a complete goofball and never felt ashamed of my dance moves or silly for acting like an idiot. My fond memories of Boulder lie within these times. Feeling like I could open up to someone in whatever way provided me with feelings of love for the city I lived it. I will never forget this precious boy. Now Jannik watches over us, guiding us, showing us how to boogie on. Sorry for getting too personal here, I am not exactly sure it's appropriate but the practice of writing makes me feel like I can help his story live on, without it being a tragic one. I want the words that follow him for the rest of his life to be whole heartedly positive ones, filled with love. Because that's what he was all about.

Went a little crazy on PHHHOTO this weekend. Follow me @brynnewman

  1. Loveee the glitter hair & laughing re finding glitter for days... sounds familiar.

Also, thank you for sharing your experience and creating such a lovely and sweet tribute to your friend. I've felt that same weird fear (is that the right word?) when posting personal things, but I so connected with what you had to say. We truly are defined by the people we choose to surround ourselves with, and it sounds like you have some wonderful people nearby. Couldn't ask for much more than that :)
