Rob and I went down to Carmel last weekend and went exploring for different surf spots while we waited to check into the hotel. While checking the waves at Andrew Molera State Park we found Big Sur's oldest building, Cooper Cabin! This cabin was built sometime in the 1860's and is believed to be Big Sur's oldest standing building. It made for the perfect surroundings to shoot this look and paired perfectly with my new favorite travel companion, my Goorin.
You're probably wondering, "What is a Goorin?" Well let's move up Highway 1 a few hundred miles north and tack on about 30 years to Mr. Cooper's cabin, we meet the original Goorin. Cassel Goorin began making hats in 1895, later teaching his sons the trade of hat making and changing the company name to Goorin Brothers in 1921. Each Goorin hat was made to order and the company grew to be the official hat company of the Olympics some years later perpetuating them into coast to coast recognition.
Now in 2015 Goorin continues to make a name for itself, especially in my hat collection. I remember last Christmas Eve we were perusing the streets on a brisk afternoon in the French Quarter of New Orleans – we were window shopping. I stopped in my tracks. I looked into the window of a particular shop and like a kid looking into the Macy's Christmas window display, I got so close my nose was almost touching the glass. It was a Goorin Hat Shop. I oohed and ahhed. I called everyone over and we ogled at the craftsmanship, the beautiful displays, and ambiance of our surroundings.
The next day Rob walked out on Christmas morning with a Goorin hat box. Inside was the most perfect gift I could have asked for. Can you tell I am a hat person? Best of all, his mom didn't even tell him about my Goorin moment the day before. Talk about knowing your girlfriend better than anyone! Now almost a year later I try to continue to grow my Goorin collection whenever I can. This time it's is my new favorite travel companion (aside from Rob), The Lady Roulette.
