Oscar de la Renta at the de Young

I've been hunting for this quote for so long that now I am convinced I dreamt up the whole thing. But...recently I was reading an article and it had a quote about why fashion is art. It went along the lines of, "Fashion is most certainly art, how could you argue that something that makes you feel something every day, every time you get dressed, is not art?" I've looked at plenty of art (especially from being born into a family of artists) that has made me feel nothing. Everytime I get dressed it's a rollercoaster of emotion, confidence, sulking, smiling, hating, how could clothing make someone feel such a way!

So when I was at the Oscar de la Renta press preview and a woman came up to me and said she wasn't sure if the exhibit could be justified as an art exhibit, I was shocked. Mostly amused by her hollow outlook on the arts in general, but since then ,y interest in this topic has continued over the past few weeks. When I overhear my friends talk about looks they wear to feel confident I try to dig deeper and it's amazing to hear their responses. They all exclaim that they agree and that they too find it's fascinating that fashion can make you FEEL something.

What I'm trying to say is that this exhibit makes you feel something. It's seriously one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen. The way the exhibit was designed, the kind words of André Leon Talley and his curation, and the array of designs displayed (that were all still SO relevant) just blew me away.

Some of my favorite moments of André's discussion about Oscar and the exhibit:

In tears, "His [Oscar's] world was a world of flowers, entertaining and loyal friendships."

"Oscar wanted the dresses to make women feel happy. He loved living in the sun and nature. He loved singing and dancing. He wanted his clients to feel beautiful."

Oscar asked me if André wanted to meet someone, André kept dilly dallying around the subject and finally Oscar told André it was Laura bush. André explains his hesitation to meet her with, "I thought it was inappropriate to meet Laura bush in a sable lined trench coach and a tracksuit."

"Oscar made me stand taller. I learned by example, I was insecure and Oscar saw something in me that I didn't see in myself."

So all in all what are your thoughts on fashion, emotions, and the fashion is art debate? I'd love to hear in the comments below!

One of my favorite dresses is Annette de la Renta's favorite!
These pants are truly a dream.
Pants and tunic, yes please.
